The Highline Park NYC tour begins at the 34th Street entrance, near the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The Highline welcome sign gives visitors basic information, such as Highline Park hours, rules and regulations, special events, and the Highline flower of the week. Interestingly, Friends of the Highline offers stargazing. The tour begins on an overcast day in early May. The air is thick with mist and drizzle. Despite the weather, a few tourists brave the elements and embark on their Highline journey. The Hudson Yards are below the beginning of the Highline (at the 34th Street entrance). Long Island Railroad engines and coaches filled the yard, possibly for cleaning or maintenance. Welcome to the first video tour of our two part series dedicated to the neighborhood called Chelsea, located on the west side of the borough of Manhattan, New York, by New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com ) . Feel free to watch other great video tours of New York neighborhoods ( http://www.youtube.com/user/NewYorkHabitat?feature=mhee#g/c/5704CB831C46A022), such as the Lower east Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHA_hz0tqBU) and the Meatpacking District (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCLLwME15FU). Here in Chelsea you'll find yourself in a historical yet impressively progressive neighborhood, which is roughly bordered by 14th street to the south, 30th street to the north, 6th Avenue to the east and the Hudson River and West Street to the west. The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (440 West 21st Street) was founded in 1817. The magnificent green, lush quadrangle is a peaceful place in the bustling city. In the late 1880's the Hudson River Railroad began using 10th and 11th avenues dividing Chelsea from the waterfront. Soon the neighborhood was covered in slaughterhouses, breweries and tenements for the immigrant labor force to live in. Something to check out in this area is The Limelight Market Place (47 West 20th Street). This 25,000-square-foot former eighties nightclub, and, before that a church, has been converted into a shopping center. The 20th Street landmark's lancet windows, labyrinthine layout, and soaring chapel are the same as they ever were but now you'll find specialty clothes, housewares, chocolates and the quintessential Grimaldi's pizza. If you're an art enthusiast, you'll be delighted to know that Chelsea is considered by many to be the art capital of New York, boasting more than 200 galleries. The 1950's and 60's gave Chelsea a facelift with public housing and urban renewal projects. A few examples are the Robert Miller Gallery (524 West 26th Street), the George Billis Gallery (521 West 26th Street) and the Sonnabend (536 West 22nd Street). If you'd like to experience Chelsea like a true local, rent a vacation rental or furnished apartment from New York Habitat. There's no better way to experience the city than to live in a real New York apartment. Check out this fully furnished studio apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/6441), which is located in the heart of Chelsea at West 23rd Street and 9th Avenue. The apartment is well lit and furnished with contemporary Scandinavian and antique furniture Another great choice is this furnished 2-bedroom apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/12811). The apartment has plenty of seating and also includes a decorative fireplace and exposed brick for décor. Take a look at this furnished 1-bedroom Chelsea apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/12830). The bedroom is furnished with a queen sized bed, and there is a queen sized sofa bed in the living room. Wireless Internet is available and there is also a fireplace. If you love sports or just feel like a day at the spa, Chelsea Pier's Sports and Recreation Complex (20th Street &the Hudson River) has something for everyone. The Sports and Recreation Complex offers golf, bowling, skating, a batting cage and rock climbing. The Hudson River Park stretches for 5 miles and is packed with fun and unique daytime activities. If you ever wanted to learn to fish, the Park offers the "Big City Fishing" program for free throughout the summer. The Park also offers kayak trips and sailing, rowing, kayak polo and boat building lessons. Check the Park's Calendar for Outdoor Films, dances, farmer's markets and musical performances along the river. Well, that's a wrap of our first episode of our video tour of Chelsea, New York. If you've got some fun spots in this neighborhood to share with us, please leave a comment below. New York Habitat offers hundreds of apartments for rent in New York, including furnished apartments (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) and vacation rentals (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ). Welcome back to the second half of our series dedicated to the Chelsea, New York, by New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com) . If you missed the 1st episode, you can find it on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/NewYorkHabitat?feature=mhee#g/c/5704CB831C46A022. You can also find a lot of great videos about other neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFa9ppu8fEY ) and Soho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPflq6u9Ywk). When the sun starts to set, one of the best places to be in Chelsea is the High Line Park. The High Line was renovated to serve as a park, running from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. It's a great place to meet friends, take a leisurely walk, or have a picnic. You'll want to keep an eye out for some notable new architecture along the High Line. Here are a few locations: The Della Valle Bernheimer design (459 West 18th Street), The Chelsea Modern (447 West 18th Street) and The IAC Building (555 West 18th Street). For you fashion buffs out there, Chelsea is home to the Fashion Institute of Technology (Seventh Avenue &West 27 Street), the internationally recognized college for design, fashion and business. For political buffs, note that the national office of the Communist Party USA is located on the 8th floor of 235 West 23rd St. For French popular culture buffs, stop by the Saint Vincent De Paul Church on 23rd Street where Edith Piaf was married. In the mood for a laugh? The Gotham Comedy Club on West 23rd Street is an elegant lounge that hosts some of New York's finest comedy. For a show or a concert, here are a few of our favorite Chelsea venues: The Joyce Theater ( 175 8th Avenue), The Highline Ballroom (431 West 16th Street) and The Magnet Theater (254 W 29th Street). You'll find a great market in Chelsea. The Chelsea Markets (75 9th Avenue) borders the Meatpacking District and Chelsea. Inside the old National Biscuit Company's (Nabisco) factory we can find a marketplace representing the best that New York has to offer. Because Chelsea is such a melting pot of cultures and it is so close to excellent food sources like Chelsea Market, and The Farmer's Market in Union Square, you really can eat whatever you like. If you want to shop at Chelsea Market, you're going to need a kitchen to cook all of the great food. Take a look at this fully furnished studio apartment in Chelsea (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/8404). This simply furnished apartment has hardwood floors throughout and a tiled bathroom. The living area is furnished with a double sized futon. There is a dining table to have the option of eating all together. Air conditioning, cable television and Internet are all available with this rental. Or for those who are only looking for a room, check out this fully furnished room available for rent (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/roommate-share/7897) in a 2-bedroom apartment to share with the owner. Tenants have access to a fully equipped kitchen, living room and bathroom. The room is furnished with a single bed and has air conditioning. There is a television with cable channels in the living room and there is a washer and dryer for the convenience of doing laundry in the apartment. There are far too many great restaurants to mention them all. However, here a few we think are worth visiting: Don Giovanni (214 Tenth Avenue), Del Posto (85 10th Avenue), Moonstruck Diner (400 West 23rd Street), etc. Chelsea has also got some great cafés and bakeries. Café Grumpy ( 224 W. 20th Street), La Grainne Café ( 183 9th Avenue) and Billy's Bakery (9th Avenue between West 21st & 22nd Street) And if you're looking for some bars and lounges, here are a couple to get you started: Raine's Law Room (48 W. 17th Street) and The Frying Pan (205 12th Avenue). Well that's a wrap of the second half of our video series dedicated to Chelsea. If we've missed any of your favorite spots in the area, please share them with us in the comments section below. And if you're coming to New York, be sure to book a vacation rental (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ) or furnished apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) with New York Habitat. You'll find furnished apartments all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Also, be sure to check out our blog, if you want more information about the neighborhood of Chelsea : http://www.nyhabitat.com/blog/2012/02/03/video-tour-chelsea-new-york-part-2/ Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel so you'll be notified when new video tours will come out. Although the Highline has been significantly upgraded to serve as a pedestrian park, railroad tracks and turn of the century iron railings give the park an authentic look. As the Highline swerves into Chelsea, the afterthought of building a raised railroad track over a bustling city becomes painfully apparent. In some cases, the Highline is literally feet away from bedroom windows. Many new developments come into view as the Highline hits Chelsea. Old buildings were knocked down and modern residential apartments are going up in their place. The Highline provides a unique view of several Manhattan construction scenes. Concrete slabs give way to an industrial looking grated metal floor as the Highline weaves into the heart of Chelsea. Plants and trees engulf the Highline's walking path, creating an urban garden oasis. Another interesting Highline feature is the Stadium seating performance area. Rising wooden benches provide an ideal place to take in a concert in the fresh Manhattan air. Further ahead, several vendors sell Highline branded merchandise, such as Highline t-shirts, magnets, and coffee mugs. As Chelsea turns into the Meatpacking District, the Highline tour comes to an end. From Midtown Manhattan through Chelsea and to the chic Meatpacking District, the Highline is a pleasant walk for NYC residents and visitors alike.

NEW YORK — An explosion caused by what officials believe was a homemade bomb tore through the Chelsea neighborhood in New York City injuring at least 29 people on Saturday night. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, the New York City Fire Department said. The force of the explosion blew out windows and could be heard several blocks away, according to BBC. Authorities believe the blast was caused by an explosive device in or near a dumpster, according to CNN. The blast, which happened around 8:30 p.m., prompted the closure of a large section of Manhattan south of Midtown, the New York Times reported. On Sunday, 14th Street to 32nd Street was closed to traffic between Fifth and Eighth Avenues until further notice, according to the New York Times. A second device, believed to be a pressure cooker rigged with wires, was later found several blocks away on West 27th street. It was later safely removed by the NYPD Bomb Squad, according to the New York Police Department. “There is no specific and credible threat to New York City from any terror organization,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news conference late Saturday night. However, the mayor did go on to say, “we believe at this point in time this was an intentional act.” Authorities said there appears to be no connection to a pipe bomb that exploded in a garbage can earlier on Saturday in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, USA Today reported. That blast occurred near a Marine charity run with no injuries reported, according to USA Today. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chelsea Market - New York City About Chelsea Market--http://www.chelseamarket.com A block long and a block wide and just a short walk from the Hudson River in the area of Manhattan known as the Meatpacking District, Chelsea Market has become in just fifteen years one of the greatest indoor food halls of the world, with more than thirty-five vendors purveying everything from soup to nuts, wine to coffee, cheese to cheesecake. Attracting 6 million national and international visitors annually, it is one of the most trafficked, and written-about, destinations of any kind in New York City. Chelsea Market is a neighborhood market with a global perspective. The area has always been the locus of food in the city, beginning with the Algonquin Indians, who traded their game and crops on the banks of the Hudson River at this same spot. The trains of the High Line once served the wholesale butchers who lined the streets beneath the tracks and cooled their provisions with blocks of Hudson River ice, and the National Biscuit Company established its factory—now reclaimed as the Chelsea Market—here to take advantage of the butchers’ lard in the nineteenth century. This long history—and the stripped-down brick architecture of the building—gives the Market a unique character. For foodies and even casual tourists, it is possible to enter the Market at one end in the morning and not exit the other until lunchtime, without ever growing bored—and certainly without ever going hungry. Hello and welcome for another video tour of a great New York neighborhood by New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com ). Today's video will be the first video tour of our two part series dedicated to the Meatpacking District, a small neighborhood in Manhattan, New York, arguably one of New York's most fashionable neighborhoods! Also, feel free to watch other great video tours of New York neighborhoods ( http://www.youtube.com/user/NewYorkHabitat?feature=mhee#g/c/5704CB831C46A022 ), such as Greenwich Village ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFa9ppu8fEY ) or Soho ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPflq6u9YWk ). The Meatpacking District is roughly bordered by west 14th street to the north, Gansevoort Street to the south, the Hudson River to the west and Hudson Street to the east. It is located between two other great neighborhoods, Chelsea to the North and the West Village to the south. Gansevoort History Originally an Indian trail, this street was named after General Peter Gansevoort who, during the American Revolution, had a fort built on this very street. In the 1880s, a marketplace was established along with the construction of factory buildings, which helped to establish an industrial landscape in the area. One of the largest businesses was packing meat, hence the name 'Meatpacking District'. More recently as the plants began to move out, buildings in the neighborhood became derelict and forgotten. Preservation In the 1990s high end retailers began moving in and establishing themselves in the old factories which became the catalyst for the district's transformation. Today, the district is a vibrant neighborhood of remaining meat packers, high-end retail commerce, restaurants, offices, clubs, galleries, and apartments. The most current preservation project is the High Line Park, which begins in the Meatpacking and runs through the full length of Chelsea. If you'd like to experience the Meatpacking District like a true local, you should definitely rent a vacation rental or furnished apartment from New York Habitat. There's no better way to experience this city than to live in a real New York apartment. For example, take a look at this furnished 1 bedroom apartment, which is situated in the heart of the Meatpacking District (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/14671 ). It is located on the top floor of a 4-story walk-up building and features the beauty of interior exposed brick. There is a counter top area with seating, cable television, an air conditioner and, of course, a fully equipped kitchen. Another great option is this furnished studio apartment that is situated right on the border of the Meatpacking District and Chelsea (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/14585 ). The apartment is on the second floor of a walk-up building, features a living and sleeping area along with a separate kitchen and a dining area. The apartment has a decorative fireplace along with an air conditioner to provide comfort during the hot summer months. Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave) You'll still find a great market in the area. The Chelsea Market borders the Meatpacking District and Chelsea. This New York food destination aims to please. Inside the old National Biscuit Company's (Nabisco) factory there is a marketplace representing some of the best that New York has to offer. Here you can find vendors unique to the New York area, selling everything from sushi to gelato; any craving can be quenched at this eatery. Pier 54 (West St & West 13th St) If you're in the Meatpacking District in the summer, make sure you check out the schedule for yearly events held at Hudson River Park's Pier 54, found at West St and West 13th St. RiverRocks (http://pier54.com/riverrocks/) is a rock festival held every summer at Pier 54 that focuses on up-and-coming artists. It has featured such groups as the White Stripes and Rooney. You can also enjoy a free outdoor film and free popcorn throughout the summer at Pier 54. Check their website (http://pier54.com/riverflicks/) for show times. Remember that New York Habitat offers hundreds of apartments for rent in New York, including furnished apartments (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) and vacation rentals (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ). Also, be sure to check out our blog, if you want to learn more about the Meatpacking District : http://www.nyhabitat.com/blog/2011/10/19/new-york-city-video-tour-meatpacking-district-part-1/ Well, that's a wrap of our first episode of our video tour of the Meatpacking District. Benvenuti al secondo episodio del nostro video-tour in due parti dedicato al quartiere di Chelsea, New York, realizzato da New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com/it). Lungo High Line, potrete ammirare dell’architettura moderna.
