  • New York's Chelsea and the High Line

We’re going to take a walk in Chelsea, one of the nicest neighborhoods of Manhattan. Click to Subscribe http://bit.ly/2pmdyeu It's primarily residential place for local people rather than for tourists, which makes it all that much more attractive for the inquisitive visitor to go explore -- you'll find a mix of quiet side streets and busy retail avenues.. Chelsea's located between 14th St. and 34th St., between the Hudson River and about 6th Avenue, just about 1 mile south of Times Square, which puts it pretty close to Midtown and yet it is a world apart. Its main characteristic are the many streets of residential row houses, a very exclusive enclave.20 years ago there was nothing particularly exciting about the neighborhood. It was always a nice residential zone, but in recent decades t...

Chelsea Market - New York City About Chelsea Market--http://www.chelseamarket.com A block long and a block wide and just a short walk from the Hudson River in the area of Manhattan known as the Meatpacking District, Chelsea Market has become in just fifteen years one of the greatest indoor food halls of the world, with more than thirty-five vendors purveying everything from soup to nuts, wine to coffee, cheese to cheesecake. Attracting 6 million national and international visitors annually, it is one of the most trafficked, and written-about, destinations of any kind in New York City. Chelsea Market is a neighborhood market with a global perspective. The "West Side Cowboys" in New York City, one of the most fun secrets of the High Line, were city-appointed safety vigilantes on horseback that once prevented pedestrian accidents along 10th Avenue, a thoroughfare nicknamed Death Avenue due to the large number of accidents between freight trains and pedestrians. The original High Line, opened in 1934, was an elevated freight viaduct for the New York Central railroad, built in response to the accidents. Read more at http://untap.nyc/1PPFOM8

Welcome to the first video tour of our two part series dedicated to the neighborhood called Chelsea, located on the west side of the borough of Manhattan, New York, by New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com ) . Feel free to watch other great video tours of New York neighborhoods ( http://www.youtube.com/user/NewYorkHabitat?feature=mhee#g/c/5704CB831C46A022), such as the Lower east Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHA_hz0tqBU) and the Meatpacking District (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCLLwME15FU). Here in Chelsea you'll find yourself in a historical yet impressively progressive neighborhood, which is roughly bordered by 14th street to the south, 30th street to the north, 6th Avenue to the east and the Hudson River and West Street to the west. The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (440 West 21st Street) was founded in 1817. The magnificent green, lush quadrangle is a peaceful place in the bustling city. In the late 1880's the Hudson River Railroad began using 10th and 11th avenues dividing Chelsea from the waterfront. Soon the neighborhood was covered in slaughterhouses, breweries and tenements for the immigrant labor force to live in. Something to check out in this area is The Limelight Market Place (47 West 20th Street). This 25,000-square-foot former eighties nightclub, and, before that a church, has been converted into a shopping center. The 20th Street landmark's lancet windows, labyrinthine layout, and soaring chapel are the same as they ever were but now you'll find specialty clothes, housewares, chocolates and the quintessential Grimaldi's pizza. If you're an art enthusiast, you'll be delighted to know that Chelsea is considered by many to be the art capital of New York, boasting more than 200 galleries. The 1950's and 60's gave Chelsea a facelift with public housing and urban renewal projects. A few examples are the Robert Miller Gallery (524 West 26th Street), the George Billis Gallery (521 West 26th Street) and the Sonnabend (536 West 22nd Street). If you'd like to experience Chelsea like a true local, rent a vacation rental or furnished apartment from New York Habitat. There's no better way to experience the city than to live in a real New York apartment. Check out this fully furnished studio apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/6441), which is located in the heart of Chelsea at West 23rd Street and 9th Avenue. The apartment is well lit and furnished with contemporary Scandinavian and antique furniture Another great choice is this furnished 2-bedroom apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/12811). The apartment has plenty of seating and also includes a decorative fireplace and exposed brick for décor. Take a look at this furnished 1-bedroom Chelsea apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/12830). The bedroom is furnished with a queen sized bed, and there is a queen sized sofa bed in the living room. Wireless Internet is available and there is also a fireplace. If you love sports or just feel like a day at the spa, Chelsea Pier's Sports and Recreation Complex (20th Street &the Hudson River) has something for everyone. The Sports and Recreation Complex offers golf, bowling, skating, a batting cage and rock climbing. The Hudson River Park stretches for 5 miles and is packed with fun and unique daytime activities. If you ever wanted to learn to fish, the Park offers the "Big City Fishing" program for free throughout the summer. The Park also offers kayak trips and sailing, rowing, kayak polo and boat building lessons. Check the Park's Calendar for Outdoor Films, dances, farmer's markets and musical performances along the river. Well, that's a wrap of our first episode of our video tour of Chelsea, New York. If you've got some fun spots in this neighborhood to share with us, please leave a comment below. New York Habitat offers hundreds of apartments for rent in New York, including furnished apartments (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) and vacation rentals (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ). Also, be sure to check out our blog, if you want to learn more about the neighborhood of Chelsea: http://www.nyhabitat.com/blog/2012/01/21/chelsea-new-york-video-tour-part-1/ Thanks for watching our New York Video Tour and we hope to see you soon touring the art scene in lovely Chelsea, New York! It was always a nice residential zone, but in recent decades things have gotten a lot more interesting with the introduction of hundreds of art galleries and the High Line, an elevated park along what had been a railroad viaduct. The High Line has become one of the most popular attractions in New York City -- it's amazing. Originally it was planned as a neighborhood park because Chelsea doesn't have much in the way of parks, and now it attracts visitors from all over the world. And New Yorkers love it as well. We will take you on a walk from start to finish later in the program, a mile and a half from the Whitney Museum up to Hudson Yards. First let's walk along a little bit more in these quiet side streets in the busy commercial avenues. You'll find the bicycle rental stands all over Manhattan and they’re popular here in Chelsea with some lanes devoted to bicycles. Eighth Avenue is one of the main commercial and retail thoroughfares here, it's almost like the village center with a nice variety of shops, mostly independent and some chain stores are found here. Restaurants and delis with a variety of foods in a nice price range that cater to all income levels, because while this is an expensive neighborhood with mostly high-end residences, and tourists always coming through looking for bargains, there are also many long-term residents, some of them living in rent-controlled and rent-subsidized apartments. official site of the High Line: http://www.thehighline.org/ Great Museums High Line movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CgTlg_L_Sw http://tourvideos.com/

The area has always been the locus of food in the city, beginning with the Algonquin Indians, who traded their game and crops on the banks of the Hudson River at this same spot. The trains of the High Line once served the wholesale butchers who lined the streets beneath the tracks and cooled their provisions with blocks of Hudson River ice, and the National Biscuit Company established its factory—now reclaimed as the Chelsea Market—here to take advantage of the butchers’ lard in the nineteenth century. This long history—and the stripped-down brick architecture of the building—gives the Market a unique character. For foodies and even casual tourists, it is possible to enter the Market at one end in the morning and not exit the other until lunchtime, without ever growing bored—and certainly without ever going hungry. Come take a walk on the High Side on our High Line tour! Join us for a fun filled adventure on NYC’s only elevated park known as the Highline! Whether you’re interested in History, Architecture, Nature or just people watching, The High Line has it all! Stroll through the neighborhood of Chelsea from a vantage point never seen before! You’ll tread the path once traversed by fire breathing locomotives and enjoy surprising views of the Hudson River. We will start the tour at the famous Chelsea marketplace and may stop by an art gallery. Walk through former factories and warehouses, where trains would roll right inside the building to unload their goods and learn some of the areas industrial past. You’ll also hear stories of the famous Meatpacking District and how it transformed from rows of slaughterhouses to one of the most chic neighborhoods in the world. See amazing architecture ranging from ultra modern, such as The Standard Hotel, or Frank Gehry’s undulating glass curtain design of the IAC building to the Art Deco styling of the Empire State Building.

Welcome back to the second half of our series dedicated to the Chelsea, New York, by New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com) . If you missed the 1st episode, you can find it on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/NewYorkHabitat?feature=mhee#g/c/5704CB831C46A022. You can also find a lot of great videos about other neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFa9ppu8fEY ) and Soho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPflq6u9Ywk). When the sun starts to set, one of the best places to be in Chelsea is the High Line Park. The High Line was renovated to serve as a park, running from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. It's a great place to meet friends, take a leisurely walk, or have a picnic. You'll want to keep an eye out for some notable new architecture along the High Line. Here are a few locations: The Della Valle Bernheimer design (459 West 18th Street), The Chelsea Modern (447 West 18th Street) and The IAC Building (555 West 18th Street). For you fashion buffs out there, Chelsea is home to the Fashion Institute of Technology (Seventh Avenue &West 27 Street), the internationally recognized college for design, fashion and business. For political buffs, note that the national office of the Communist Party USA is located on the 8th floor of 235 West 23rd St. For French popular culture buffs, stop by the Saint Vincent De Paul Church on 23rd Street where Edith Piaf was married. In the mood for a laugh? The Gotham Comedy Club on West 23rd Street is an elegant lounge that hosts some of New York's finest comedy. For a show or a concert, here are a few of our favorite Chelsea venues: The Joyce Theater ( 175 8th Avenue), The Highline Ballroom (431 West 16th Street) and The Magnet Theater (254 W 29th Street). You'll find a great market in Chelsea. The Chelsea Markets (75 9th Avenue) borders the Meatpacking District and Chelsea. Inside the old National Biscuit Company's (Nabisco) factory we can find a marketplace representing the best that New York has to offer. Because Chelsea is such a melting pot of cultures and it is so close to excellent food sources like Chelsea Market, and The Farmer's Market in Union Square, you really can eat whatever you like. If you want to shop at Chelsea Market, you're going to need a kitchen to cook all of the great food. Take a look at this fully furnished studio apartment in Chelsea (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/8404). This simply furnished apartment has hardwood floors throughout and a tiled bathroom. The living area is furnished with a double sized futon. There is a dining table to have the option of eating all together. Air conditioning, cable television and Internet are all available with this rental. Or for those who are only looking for a room, check out this fully furnished room available for rent (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/roommate-share/7897) in a 2-bedroom apartment to share with the owner. Tenants have access to a fully equipped kitchen, living room and bathroom. The room is furnished with a single bed and has air conditioning. There is a television with cable channels in the living room and there is a washer and dryer for the convenience of doing laundry in the apartment. There are far too many great restaurants to mention them all. However, here a few we think are worth visiting: Don Giovanni (214 Tenth Avenue), Del Posto (85 10th Avenue), Moonstruck Diner (400 West 23rd Street), etc. Chelsea has also got some great cafés and bakeries. Café Grumpy ( 224 W. 20th Street), La Grainne Café ( 183 9th Avenue) and Billy's Bakery (9th Avenue between West 21st & 22nd Street) And if you're looking for some bars and lounges, here are a couple to get you started: Raine's Law Room (48 W. 17th Street) and The Frying Pan (205 12th Avenue). Well that's a wrap of the second half of our video series dedicated to Chelsea. If we've missed any of your favorite spots in the area, please share them with us in the comments section below. And if you're coming to New York, be sure to book a vacation rental (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ) or furnished apartment (http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) with New York Habitat. You'll find furnished apartments all over Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. In this video tour, David Hill of New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com) explores the thriving districts Kensington & Chelsea in London! The Royal borough of Kensington & Chelsea is the most densely populated in the UK and one of the wealthiest. The borough stretches roughly from Harrow Road in the north to the banks of the Thames in the south, and from Finborough road in the west to Hyde Park in the east. It is the most popular accommodation destination for visitors coming to the city for a short period. In the tour, we'll explore the best shopping spots in the area, stop by museums such as the Natural History Museum, have a look at famous neighborhoods such as Notting Hill and visit parks such as Kensington Gardens! Shopping in Kensington and Chelsea The tour starts at one of the most popular shopping destinations in London: Kensington High Street. Kensington High Street boasts many chain stores known throughout the world, such as Marks & Spenser, H&M, Whole Foods Market, and many more. In Chelsea, King's Road is the place to be. King's Road features many boutiques stores, which you can find all the way up to Sloane Square. From Sloane Square, Sloane Street runs north to Knightsbridge and Hyde Park. At Sloane Street, you'll find the best of fashion at stores such as Gucci, Prada, Versace, Jimmy Choo and more. Along Knightsbridge, you'll find Harrods: arguably London's most famous department store. Culture & Famous Museums in Kensington & Chelsea In Kensington you can find the Natural History Museum, which boasts over 70 million items in its five main collections Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy, Palaeantology and Zoology. The Science Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum are located just blocks away. In between the Natural History Museum and the Albert Memorial, which can be found in Kensington Gardens, lies the Royal Albert Hall. This impressive building hosts concerts, plays and operas. All these buildings together show South Kensington really is a central point of art and culture in London. Stay in Kensington or Chelsea in your own Vacation Rental Apartment After a busy day of shopping, exploring the area and taking in some culture, you can relax and come home to your own London vacation rental apartment. (http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation). NY Habitat has many vacation rental apartments in Kensington and Chelsea that can provide a prefect base to explore London from. Take for example this modern 2-bedroom accommodation in South Kensington: http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation/765, which is just minutes from the Earl's Court exhibition center. If you're thinking of traveling to London with a big family or group of friends, this 3-bedroom apartment in Chelsea might be a fantastic fit for you: http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation/1256. This classic apartment with a private balcony can sleep up to six people, and is located steps away from the bustling King's Road! Check http://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment.html for our entire selection of apartments in London. Notting Hill & Kensington Gardens Next on the tour is Notting Hill, which lies to the northwest of Kensington Gardens. Anyone who's ever seen the movie Notting Hill starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts will be familiar with the beautiful colored houses of Portobello Road and the secluded private gardens of the neighborhood. Visit Notting Hill on a Saturday to explore the famous market of Portobello Road, where you can pick up antiques, clothes and more. When you're visiting Kensington, of course you also have to stop by its famous parks. Kensington Gardens is the western half of Hyde Park, and includes the Albert Memorial. Stroll through the park to feel miles away from the busy city life. After a long afternoon of exploring Kensington, end the day in one of Kensington's excellent pubs or restaurants. See more: http://www.corcoran.com/nyc/Listings/Display/3679747 Rarely does a prime, Chelsea, multi-family townhouse, of this calibre, become available. 326 West 19th Street’s beautifully restrained brownstone facade, sits on an elegant row of historic townhouses, and is located on lovely tree-lined street. It exudes the charm and class of it’s townhouse roots, while having been updated and meticulously maintained as an income producing apartment building. Invest in it as is; with a large owner’s garden unit and 4 apartments above; or use it’s additional build-able rights to expand the property into a large single family home, with a penthouse addition viable. One thing that’s certain is that this is an opportunity to own a building with room to grow and appreciate, in the heart of one of Manhattan’s hottest neighborhoods. The subject property is a 22' X 50’ building on a 22' X 92’ lot. In addition to the existing 4200 SF building, it has over 1800 SF of additional build-able Air Rights, permitting expansion to a residence of over 6020 SF. It is zoned as quality housing R7B, and expansion is NOT restricted by any area Landmark Historic District designation. It contains three fair market, and two rent stabilized apartments.
